Rip Van Winkle Awakes to Technological Wonderland

This is my first post to this website.   My thanks to Gail Bottomley for her Get a Website in a Day workshop which was held in Brisbane at the end of February 2010.  That helped break the ice with my fear of the unknown.  Helped undo my block regarding self-hosted WordPress websites.

You see, although I was tech-savy enough to take a WEA course in 1997 and learn how to put up basic  websites using HTML (and its easy!) the technology didn’t exist to easily make sophisticated websites back then. The internet was just emerging into the public consciousness.

My programming skills, though above average, just wasn’t up to building more rigorous websites.  At least not without a huge effort.   I turned my back on web programming. Over the years I kept putting up simple HTML pages.  They served the purpose.  They were easy.  They were within my comfort zone.

An example of this: www.hohohahaha.com

And as the next 13 years rolled by, all these web related advances took place: CSS, multi-domain hosting, Fantastico, WordPress, webinar trainings etc.  In recent years this technological Rip Van Winkle gradually awoke.  And realized it was now a wonderland.

I  found freedom.  A technological liberation from “the details”.  The tools that didn’t exist in 1997 were now abundantly available.  Hallelujah!

With a self hosted WordPress website I’m now able to build ever more sophisticated websites, and my soul can find expression through the medium of the internet, the Gutenberg press of our day.

Laughter is my passion.  And of all the other websites I could start working on, I chose this one on laughter.

Why “North” was dropped from this Website Name

Why SydneyLaughterClub as the website address?  Why not NorthSydneyLaughterClub, which is what this website will be primarily focused on, and where I currently lead laughter?  This is in case I lead laughter clubs outside North Sydney.  Should I be leading laughter outside  North Sydney Community Centre, the website address will still be appropriate.

This website is essentially my blog for my laughter leading experiences in Sydney, Australia. I feel I’ve arrived.  Finally.
